Bi-Fold & Folding Sliding: What 2+1 or 3+1 Means Here
The same numbers are used as telescopic doors, but the job of each panel is different. On folding systems, no panel is fixed to the wall — every leaf folds and slides.
How folding configuration works
Before “+” = panels that stay folded / parked on the track until you need full width. After “+” = the main everyday panel — the one you use like a normal door (hinged swing or lead sliding leaf) for daily entry, similar to a casement or single swing door.
Example 3+1: three foldable panels + one regular-use panel. For daily coming and going you mainly use the +1 panel. When guests arrive or you want the balcony fully open, you release the folded stack so ~95% of the opening is free.
Bi-fold (multi-panel)
2, 3, 4 or 6 hinged panels on a top track. They fold like an accordion and slide to one side. Best for balconies, patios, wide living openings where you want maximum clear width.
Fold & slide (often 2+1 style)
Typically two panels on imported slim profiles — one folds behind the other for wide opening, or you use the lead panel alone for quick access. Popular for entrance gates and showrooms.
Not the same as telescopic
Telescopic 2+1 / 3+1 uses a fixed panel + sliding stack (~50–80% opening). Folding 2+1 / 3+1 uses a daily-use +1 panel + foldable panels for full opening. Compare on our telescopic guide.
What should you choose?
- Kitchen smell partition, ~75% walk-through, fixed end panel OK → Telescopic 3+1 / 4+1
- Balcony or garden — almost full opening → Bi-Fold calculator (4 or 6 panels)
- Main gate — daily single-door feel + wide open sometimes → Fold & Slide calculator
- Only ~50% opening, centre-opening sliding → Telescopic 2+2 (not bi-fold)
Example — 10–12 ft balcony (Bi-Fold)
Opening ~11 ft wide × 8 ft high → usually 4 panels. Park the stack to one side for ~95% clear. Price on the Bi-Fold calc (₹1,750–2,850/sqft band).
Example — 6–8 ft entrance (Fold & Slide)
Opening ~7 ft × 7–8 ft → typically 2 panels; use the lead leaf daily, fold both for wide access. Quote on the Fold & Slide calc (₹1,550–2,150/sqft band).
Install / process (short)
Site measure → fabricate to exact size → deliver pre-cut panels → on-site assembly & alignment. Standard 4-panel balcony: ~1 day. 6+ panels or entrance gate: ~1–2 days. Same-day use after install.
